(still spoilery) What exactly did Near do that's so bad... by

...besides not being L?
Poor Near. It's tough being the successor of a fan favorite. I like the poor kid, although not as much as L. (Although if Near were an albino hobbit, that would actually be pretty awesome).
Also, backing up Maudlin on L. He only lost because the deck was totally and entirely stacked against him, and Near only succeeded because L laid the groundwork. He said as much at the end speech (at least in the manga) - he couldn't measure up to L, but with him, some sorta-kinda-halfway-intentional assistance from Mello, and what L already did, then he could do it. L is the greatest.
/end babble.

So, I just recently got a LiveJournal account (actually, for PPC purposes, so I'm probably going to be asking for permission as soon as I have some good samples up) and I was just wondering what's considered polite or okay there. Is it considered okay to friend people you haven't talked to so that you can see when they post stuff, or is that considered annoying? Is it normal or correct to post original fiction? How long are analysis... things advised to be before everyone wants you to shut up? Anything else I should know? And can someone help me make the stupid LJ-cut actually work?

I can has permission? by

So yeah, its permission time! Here are my agents.
Agent Julius Riddick
Department: of Mary Sues, formerly Freelance Division
Appearence: 6'2", long hair dyed black, a three-inch scar above his left eye, angular features, very skinny, with wiry muscles (which he's ticked off about because, "When have women found wiry muscles attractive?")
LO: He refuses to tell anyone anything, but he's been observed to have a thing for redheads.
Personality: Julius Riddick hasn't been at the PPC very long, but he likes to act like he's been around for a while. He's rather bad-tempered, but is more 'endearingly grumpy' than 'gets angry a lot'. He pretends not to, but he's very fond of his partner and quite loyal to her. He has an awful tendancy to wax philisophical, maniacal, or just plain weird, and listens to techno 'music'. He gets rather hack-happy with his favorite black ax, but since when is it a crime to get good at your job? However, he knows very little about the Harry Potter contiunuum, so he's been partnered with -
Agent Leila Asher
Department: of Mary Sues, formerly DoI
Appearence: 5'7", black hair cropped short around the jawline, some very, very old scars along her wrists that Julius is pretending not to see so long as there aren't any more of them, rather petite, delicate features, and not as strong as she would like.
LO: Remus Lupin, Sirius Black, Doctor Who, and others...
Personality: Leila gets very shy around new people, but is exuberent to the point of disbelief once she opens up to someone, which she does pretty quickly. She has a tendancy to adress everyone as 'matey' or 'good sir'. Leila isn't actually very good at fighting, but she was assigned to DMS because a) from her DoI days, she's gotten very good at assembling chargelists, b) she's one of the few Agents who knows how to work the HQ computers, and c) she's very familiar with the various canons Agent Riddick isn't (familiar with). She's memorized most of Harry Potter and Doctor Who, but is familiar with other canons (and geek rock).
Okay, that seems to be everything...Oh, the link to my writings! This will be my first mission I post, if I do manage to snag permission. http://edward-wilder.livejournal.com/587.html

March Madness prize(s)! (Also a word about Wiki images.) by

Reply
Yes, that's right, I haven't forgotten and I haven't been slacking off
much. The first prize for March Madness, Trojie's, is done, and you can see a low-res version here: Lasa and Mombi.
Trojie is getting a much nicer version via e-mail. What she does with it is up to her.
Coming up next: beta-reading for Miah and a drawing of plushie!Bronwyn for Bronwyn. Hopefully I'll get those done quickly enough that I'll be able to post about them in this thread, hence the parenthetical plural. {= )
Now, so I don't have to double-post, about images on the wiki.
Over the last couple of days, I've gone through all the images on the wiki, putting them in categories. So, part one of this is: Hey, guys! Did you know that we have categories for images? I didn't until a couple of days ago, but you should put your images in them after you upload them! You have to do it by clicking "Edit," though; there's no quick-add function like on regular articles.
Part two is that I noticed a lot of images that aren't linked to articles. In some cases that was because a new file is being used instead, and I deleted some of those, but there are still others I wasn't sure about. If you've uploaded images to the wiki, please go through them and make sure you either do something with them or delete them. Otherwise they're just taking up someone's server space. Thanks!

I might've started putting together ideas without knowing what the heck I was doing! If this ends up as more than a spark, I'm definitely going to consult you. Plot holes are bad (except when used for construction and/or travel purposes).

I started reading this a while back, but sort of lost touch with it and forgot most of the things that happened. I'm rereading it now, and I'm realizing just how cussing good it is.

This writer on fanfiction.net basically wrote a different version of the third season of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Usually I'm quite jaded by fics like these; most writers steal a lot of material from the original canon, or they simply surgically inject a Mary Sue protagonist into the middle of things and somewhat modify the events to make said Sue look good. This writer does none of that. She manages to take the storyline in a different direction while still staying true to the how the canon works. Most OCs have fairly minor roles, and those that don't (such as General Huo) are well-written and quite likable. While this writer does seem to be a Zutaran, romance is very much NOT the central part of the plot. I hate the pairing myself and it hasn't gotten on my nerves.
All in all, a very enjoyable set of fics. In my opinion, this writer is like the Henry David Thoreau of the Avatar fandom; she manages to return the canon in better condition than before.

The main character's sister is writing a similar story, and I need ideas. I'll even take good (as far as Batman/Legolas can be good) slash.

.........
I'm staying. I need to stop giving up, and finish what I've started. No longer is this about venting my anger and disguising it as something else, it's about telling a story, and getting that story out no matter what.
I don't need to change, nor does my writing need to. What I do need to do is control myself more, and find a comfortable middle ground for me to write on. Looking back at it, all that hate and negativity was drowning out the actual intent in my writing...
Thank you all for the positive support, and thank you all for such a wonderful community with such variety, but most importantly (and perhaps ironically), thank you all for making me see that I am not a perfect writer, and denying me permission back then. It was a necessary step in my development not just as a writer, but as a better person.
But enough of that, We've got stories to write, and those sues aren't going to kill themselves!

And who has yet to write anything for them but has something eventually planned involving the SO and a bomb and a large hole in the wall, I can state with fair sureness that BM doesn't share agents with the janitors and that a few BM agents also have a grudge against some of them.
Also, I think in one interlude floating aroundsomewherenearTrojieland many hallucinogenic/used for drugs of the recreational variety Flowers comprise part of the janitorial staff.

Had to think about it for a while, but:
1) Harry Potter: "Wings" by Claudia3 is a Snape/Hermione fic. Normally this would raise all kinds of issues, but this author handles them really well in that a) Hermione is of age and working as a professor, and b) she actually addresses the issues that remain. Oh, and there's an actual plot. AU by necessity, considering that it was written in 2004.
2) Phantom of the Opera: "The Patron of the Opera" by Mereidia contains an OFC who *gasp* doesn't fall in love with the Phantom! Practically a miracle in the fandom.
3) I'll mention the Animorphs fic "Sacred Host" by Qoheleth again, which I would normally avoid due to its OFC and a hefty dose of religion. However, the author's style and the force of story overcame those things for me, and I'm quite enjoying it.
Except for the last one, I read these stories years ago, so my remembered perceptions from then may not match up with yours now. *shrug*

Division, department... Dang, I thought I had that down. Oh, well, I checked it out and I've got it now. I think. Departments are sometimes made up of divisions, but not vice versa.
Anyway, I'm just playing with the idea at the moment (don't have permission so can't do more; and don't have enough background research as-is, so wouldn't be ready in the first place). Seems to me that maintenance and janitorial would be closely related, but not entirely the same thing, considering that repairing a hole in a wall requires a slightly different skill set from cleaning up Suenicorn blood.
But, since the same talents are required for both jobs (attention to detail; endurance; some degree of physical strength; ability to think in more than three dimensions), it would not surprise me if the departments work closely enough together to share agents and tasks. It also wouldn't surprise me if they know an awful lot of things--both about the PPC and HQ--that most people don't know.

Why do I always get prolific right when I have finals or other pressing schoolwork to attend to? That's three things - two missions and an OFU chapter - in one week. Go figure.
Anyway, chapter six of the Fanfiction Academic Institute of Langley (also known by FAIL) is up! In which there is torturing of students by having military veterans run the daily Physical Training. Hilarity Ensues.

First, they're a division of the Department of Operations, not a department. They may or may not be the same people as Building Maintenance, which is pretty much what it says on the tin. Of course, considering that the building in question is actually a series of tunnels spanning perhaps hundreds of dimensions, all hooked together by invisible, stabilized plot holes--and considering that PPC Agents live in said building--I'm sure you can imagine the kinds of things they have to deal with.
Even if they're not the same people, simply cleaning up after agents is bound to make for the occasional interesting story. I'd be interested to see what you come up with, if you're thinking of writing such a one. {= )
