Assuming you have the requisite magic and such, I'm heading to Garth Nix's Old Kingdom. Learn Charter Magic and swordfighting, possibly become a sworn sword-hand of either Sabriel or Lirael, defend the world against Free Magic and the Dead! And even if I died, I'd be able to find out what lay beyond Death and the starry sky, which I've wanted to know ever since I learned about it in Abhorsen.
Then when I come home, I can impress everyone with my wicked swordfighting skills. There's no quicker way to learn than life-or-death, amiright?
And if I could, I'd bring my best friend. I'd love to go on an adventure with her, especially since she introduced me to those books.

I suppose one of the important questions... by
on 2019-07-18 16:12:00 UTC
Reply
... is how you interact with the existing systems. Can you be assumed to have all the requisite paperwork and have it filed and such so that you, for example, are treated essentially as a recent, legal arrival in the area? Do you speak the language? If the setting is magical, do you possess such magic? For example, could you go into the Fate universe and participate in a Holy Grail War? If so, will your magic return with you? What financial resources do you have access to when you visit this other plane of existence? What influence can you wield? Do you, by visiting, gain knowledge of cultural norms enough that you can at least seem like somebody who comes from the same planet, even if you must have been hiding under a rock for most of your life?

Full-sized version available here. As seen on deviantArt.
The reference file includes what I was thinking on a few of the buildings. It also includes the blank road grid, and a rendering of the building plan onto Neshomeh's map, in case the linework is a bit too opaque.
This was really fun! I don't often do detailed stuff like this (most of my detail work goes into shading), so it was really interesting to work on.
Come to think of it, the last time I remember doing fiddly lines-plus-architecture, it was for those 1 Revu notes I made for Barony Iximaz back in 2016... I'm sensing a theme here.

The Posting of Threads by
on 2019-07-18 13:04:00 UTC
Reply
The posting of threads is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a thread must have THREE DIFFERENT TRAITS.
First of all, every thread must be properly quirky,
And suiting the feel of the PPC Board.
Not for us hate-fuelled ranting, or murderous planning--
Close them down, shut them off, see the quirky restored.
Yet remember as well that the Board is quite smart,
And think of how 'quirky' is different from 'crazy'.
We can always do serious, when leavened with humour,
But just yelling 'InSaNe!!!'? I'm afraid that's plain lazy.
Next, let me tell you a thread needs engagement,
It needs to encourage more Boarders to post.
And not just to say they agree (or the opposite):
A thread that's just 'yes, no, perhaps' will be toast.
No - whether you're seeking to start a discussion,
A story, a game, or a dozen more choices,
You need to craft something your friends will reply to,
And then to each other, each sharing their voices.
But above and beyond this there's one more thing needed,
A trait that will grant to you all that you dream.
To get those replies, to open a topic,
To make the Board better -- a thread NEEDS A THEME.
When you notice a thread, whether silly or serious,
That pulls in the comments, that makes the smiles beam,
There's always one thing that has made it successful:
It's the theme, yes the theme, it's the well-chosen theme.
The explicit implicit
All-gonna-stick-withit
Intriguing and geeky singular THEME.

... and she immediately said 'bank vault'. I don't think she's planning on staying long. ^~
For myself, I would head to Nargothrond, the city that stood at the pinnacle of Noldorin culture in Middle-earth. I'd go sometime between the arrival of Men in Beleriand in 311, and the Dagor Bragollach in 455 (because no-one wants to hang around for the war). I'd stick around for long enough to learn conversational Sindarin; not sure how long that would be.
As for what I'd do... I'd explore. I'd talk. I'd find out all the things that Tolkien never recorded. I'd spend a lot of time in the library. ^^ I'd sneak in a camera and get pictures of all the art.
(I would consider visiting Valinor in the time of the Trees, too, except I'm pretty sure that would be harrowingly bad for a mortal body. Alas.)

I'm a big fan of the website's Wizarding Specialism quiz, and particularly the way it encourages you to retake it every year to see if your speciality has shifted. (It's also great how DD keeps adding to it - it's hard to believe the original version literally only had 'life' and 'machines'!)
Come to think of it, the new Personal Oath Generator is pretty swish too. Okay, it's a bit buggy, but some of the results I've seen people get are just spot on.

I'd have to say the Mushroom Kingdom, for at least a month. Take in all the sights, ride a Yoshi, partake in a Mario Party, do a little kart racing, try and figure out how the desert world is usually so close to the ice world and such.

I'm pretty sure it's been a while since anyone's posted a round of prompts, so let's have us some prompts. They don't have to be used for PPC writing specifically, even if you post the results here (and please do!).
Prompt One: One character owes another three favors, and they can't really get out of following through.
Prompt Two: One character is too nervous to really talk to another and just keeps watching them instead.
Prompt Three: Two characters play a game together. It doesn't go very well.
Prompt Four: One character helps another with chores.
Prompt Five: Two characters see something incredible together.

However, it's one of the restricted portal thingys - one portal to anywhere in the multiverse and, when (if) you activate it again, a trip back.
Where would you go, what might you get up to, and how long would you hang around?
(I haven't fully made up my mind, because picking is hard, but I'm at least considering swinging by the Culture - if nothing else, they've got ridiculous medical tech and it'd probably be a fun time.)

PLAY HYPOTHESIS: Toby Fox is SHIGESATO ITOI?!?! (UNDERTALE) by
on 2019-07-18 03:07:00 UTC
Reply
Hello, Internet, welcome to Play Hypothesis! Today we're going to be discussing a fan favorite, the UNDERTALE series! But this isn't any ordinary theory about the games, oh no. Instead of drawing the connections between W.D. Gaster and the strange world of DELTARUNE and digging into the game's code to forge some kind of connection, we're going to be talking about the creator of these games, Toby Fox!
Now, let me summarize this guy's history, because I feel there's something fishy here. The story of Toby Fox is that he started off with an EarthBound ROM hack called the "Halloween Hack." From there, he went on to compose music for popular webcomic Homestuck. At some point in his life, he had a dream. A dream about an ending to a game. He woke up and realized, "I have to make that game." So he started work on an RPG that... never got finished. Eventually, he created an RPG based on a different idea. This RPG was UNDERTALE. Now, UNDERTALE isn't the game with the ending that Toby had a vision of. That game will be DELTARUNE, once the full release comes out.
Toby Fox claims that his games are heavily inspired by the MOTHER series, which is a series of three games, MOTHER, MOTHER 2, and MOTHER 3, created by Shigesato Itoi. These games each folllow a child with psychic powers defeating bad guys with he power of psychedelic backgrounds in order to stop the forces of evil. Ever heard of it? No? Well, that's perfectly normal! The series is mostly unheard of outside of Japan, except for the U.S. localization of MOTHER 2 as EarthBound. Sound familiar? It should; Toby Fox got his start with the EarthBound Halloween Hack! And it's easy to see the inspiration that UNDERTALE and DELTARUNE have in MOTHER 3, from the quirky tone, to elements of the battle system, to the very font that the games share, even the way your level, or LOVE in UNDERTALE and DELTARUNE, is written on the save file images for each game is the same! ...wait a minute. There's something fishy going on here. These two games are much too similar to ever have come from two different creators. "But NatKat!" I hear you ask. "Maybe Itoi and Toby are just similar people!" And to that I say, "If there's a rabbit hole, go down it!" In this 17-part series, I'll be proving to you that Toby Fox and Shigesato Itoi are the same person!
Now, we've just about run out of time for this video. Be sure to like the video if you liked it, leave a comment telling me which theory you want me to do next, and don't forget to subscribe and ring the bell so you don't miss the next 16 parts of this exciting new series! But in the meantime, that's just a hypothesis! A Play Hypothesis! Thanks for watching!

Starship Troopers by

In 1997, Paul Verhoeven brought us the legendary TV show "Starship Troopers". Based heavily off the series of novels by Robert Heinlein, it stayed true to the novels, while depicting a gritty and realistic perspective of a bug war. It also featured on-screen power armour, which the movie won several special effects awards for. It was followed by two spinoff TV shows, "Starship Troopers: Hero of the Federation" and "Starship Troopers: Marauder"; as well as two highly successful anime series "Starship Troopers: Invasion" and "Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars".
The movie is critically acclaimed for staying far away from the genre of parody and satire, which many assumed Verhoeven would turn the movie into.

... could be the Market Square. It's central (fitting the prominent name), and does have picnic shelters. It's also right next to the Appetiser. Depending on where the story falls in the timeline, the portal could be the fixed portal that was eventually developed into 1-Nou-2.
I don't think Aristophane can be Monty's park, for the simple reason that said park sits on a steep hill. ::) Though Vertical Cricket does sound pretty PPCvian...
(I am generally filling spaces with undescribed shops - Milverton's is part of a terrace running along the ridge. But other spots are getting more unique buildings.)

Firefly: Season Two by

Joss Whedon. He did *Justice Leauge*, of course, everyone knew that.
But what his younger fans didn't know was that Whedon had gotten his start doing television shows.
Of his two most original works, there's the fan favorite, *Buffy the Vampire Slayer*, and the massive hit called *Firefly*.
The studios loved Whedon's western sci-fi drama, and it remained on the air for seven whole seasons.
*Buffy*, however, was regarded with deep suspicion. Though it was an adaptation of earlier work, studio executives didn't trust the premise enough to bother marketing the show properly. The episodes were aired out of order on Friday nights, and eventually was cancelled.
Fans rallied, begging for more content from Whedon. A few comics were released, as well as a film, but the show's most loyal fans still hunger for more.
Also, Sarah Michelle Gellar manages to work at least one reference *Buffy* into every one of her later projects.
