So, if you're on the discord server you've probably seen us screaming at one of the badfics from the PAL series at least once. It travels across dimensions with it's merry band of suvians, fixing all the canon problems and turning various canons into mindless thralls. I decided to make a thread so we could keep track of the many continua being smushed together by this incredibly glittery region.
So here's the list so far:
-Pokémon (The home of the PAL region. If the A/N warns about pokemon references, it's probably a full blown crossover no matter how much they insist it isn't.)
-Prince of Tennis (The original home of the sue that would later give PAL it's suvian qualities before dying.)
-RWBY (There was a full blown crossover fic.)
-Danganronpa (There was a crossover, and in another fic there's a hope's peak high ripoff.)
-Ace Attorney (About half of the main cast have elements ripped off from them and one character seems like a Maya Fey duplicate. Pretty sure Ace Attorney was directly mentioned in one A/N, too.)
-Yandere Simulator (There was a oneshot fic where Pakura, the main sue from PAL, adopted the yansim protagonist and managed to give her a name longer than the my immortal protagonist and character replace the queen of England in a continuum where England isn't even mentioned.)
-Harry Potter (There's another fic where Pakura adopts Harry Potter and glitter ensues.)
-Naruto (The latest edition to the PAL saga where this time Ashura Red Satoshi Ketchum, Pakura's nffhole wife has hijacked the mind of a young Naruto.)
-Hunter x Hunter (In the Naruto fic, some of Naruto's skills are directly ripped off from this apparently. The concept of hunters the region uses is also directly ripped off from it.)
-The Hunger Games (In both the main PAL fics there is a scene apparently directly ripped off from it.)
-Elfen Lied (In the Naruto fic, one of Naruto's skills was based off of something from this too.)
-MÄR (In the Harry Potter fic many weapons from here are used and it seems an entire kingdom has been condensed into a city in the PAL region.)
-Star Wars, possibly (Obi Wan was mentioned in one of the A/Ns relating to one of Not!Naruto's abilities, but it wasn't too specific.)
So, did I miss any?
This time it's the MÄR continuum, with many weapons having been stolen for Harrison Zhao to use and a kingdom being condensed into a city in PAL.
After we went back to one of the fics to roast some people's eyebleedingly bad outfits, we noticed a couple more "references" to throw into the giant PAL cooking pot.

Having only just returned, and not being on Discord.... Where is this monstrosity located?
Because with the region, it really depends. It gets around a lot of continua. The fics are a bit easier to find, you can find most of them here! The fics that aren't included here are this one fic that was co-written with someone else and a fanfic of the fanfic featuring not!Pakura and a rare not!not!Ash. (Most content warnings apply to just about all these fics).
It's made of just as much glitter as a 'Sue, being a Legendary Pokémon magnet and able to hop between continua.
...With supposedly better laws and law enforcement (both this and the title was stated in the intro paragraphs for PAL the dark chronicles), and it's royalty are supposedly more powerful than any royal family member or government (that one's courtesy of prince of Hogwarts).
I mean... that's not exactly a high bar to clear. Hasn't literally every Pokemon region been repeatedly incapable of catching two electric-rat-obsessed incompetents and their talking cat who keep blowing themselves up? I'm just saying... ^_~
New theory: it's impossible for a Pokemon region to have a functioning government, because the first thing functioning governments do is shut down the whole "our entire country is a gladiatorial arena for elemental semi-demi-minigods" thing, which immediately removes them from the category of 'Pokemon region'.
And also removes the massive environmental pressure for wild Pokemon to level up and learn powerful attacks to fend off marauding trainers, meaning that in short order the overwhelming majority are just animals that make voice-like noises and do things like Scratch and Bite if you bother them. Okay, there's some weird stuff hanging around - looking at you, Koffing - but by and large the Pokemon just settle back into normal wildlife patterns.
(I can't imagine there isn't a story out there somewhere where people realise that our own wildlife are actually Pokemon named things like "Meow", "Ruff", "Ca-Caw", "Coo-Coo", "Moo" etc, and start training them up to use powerful attacks 'like they were always meant to'.)

If the "functioning government" in question is a democracy, Pokémon battles are such an integral part of culture in the Pokémon world that there's no way they would shut them down. (Except for Fiore, but the wild Pokémon there still battle. Otherwise the Rangers wouldn't be able to call on any useful Pokémon.) If it is a kleptocracy, there's no way the number of industries involved in Pokémon battles are going to let the government shut down. If it is a monarchy or aristocracy, they still want to preserve popular opinion so that the commoners don't rise up and overthrow them. Even if it's a self-destructive Nazi-style dictatorship that will probably be gone by the end of the decade, Pokémon battles do provide effective bread and circuses for the masses, and why outlaw them when training Pokémon provides effective weapons of war?

So far as I can determine through the intensive research of having played some games and seen some episodes, most Pokemon regions are ruled by what are essentially military setups: the most effective "government" is the gym system, where leadership is established by prowess in battle. (They may not be officially described as the government, but when a problem - even a world-threatening problem - arises, the people trying to solve it are gym leaders, Elite Four members, and Champions.) It makes perfect sense that they would want to keep the system in place; it's what grants them their authority!
Now, if a single autocrat or monarch took over, would he want to keep allowing everyone from the age of ten upwards to keep harnessing raw elemental power? Absolutely not! You can only afford that if the populace is loyal to you, and as you've just said, taking away their pit fights isn't going to do wonders for that.
But more than that: I think this idea that everyone is deeply invested in the pit-fight system is biased by who the game protagonists and Ash hang out with - to whit, other trainers. Most of the people in the game towns don't talk about their Pokemon in battle terms - they treat them as pets, or as working animals.
Frankly, if a movement arose promising to form an elected government and put an end to the "You made eye contact with me NOW DIE" / "our city has been taken over by a gang wielding all-powerful demons" setup, I think they'd be very popular.
Except for how everyone would see them as just another one of those gangs. You know, the gangs which the unelected strongmen of the Elite Four seem utterly incapable of putting down. It's almost like they keep them around for just this reason...
The question of whether such a movement could actually fulfill its promises rests on the question of whether "Pokemon don't attack humans" is actually true, or just a convenient lie. I mean, Pikachu never seems to have any qualms about electrocuting Ash, so maybe democracy advocates all just vanish in mysterious, Growlithe-centric encounters in the forest...

Does anyone know what the PAL region is?
PAL stand for Pokémon Awakens Love. It's a region that supports all six regions known to the Pokémon World. Some people like to go to PAL because according to the media, it was very beautiful. It was very sunny during the spring and summer, many colourful flowers and lush green trees and grasses in the many natural habitats PAL has and all their water bodies are crystal blue, sparkling and clean. The bushes were also bursting with Berries for Pokémon to eat. The general environment a paradise for Pokémon; hence the name. If a trainer is caught abusing Pokémon within this region, it's an immediate death sentence, as PAL takes the welfare of Pokémon, whether wild or trainer, very seriously.
With this in mind, pollution is also considered a crime here. If you are caught tainting the environment in anyway, you'll be sent to jail. And let's just say landing yourself in PAL's Jail is never a pleasant thing…..it's much worse than the jails in other regions.
Trainers are expected to do everything they can to protect their own Pokémon, which is why all the trainers living in PAL have to learn how to fight in one way or another without their Pokémon. PAL contains all the Pokémon in the six regions, and also, sometimes, even Legandaries flock here to relax in this paradise.
Let's not forget those that protect and run PAL. Officer Jennies around the region are nothing compared to them. They are called "Hunters", people that have proven themselves through rigorous examination to be an elite member of humanity. If you can pass the Hunter Exam, or "Exam from Hell" as PAL people may call it (since out of 1,200 applicants, only about 10 pass and get their license, and some actually died in the Exam), you have many benefits, such as 95% of all public facilities can be used at no cost. Furthermore, all such services are provided at first class, unrivalled freedom to travel around the regions, almost no legal responsibility for murder, and so much more.
Most people from the G-Men members are actually Hunters provided by the PAL's Prince and Princess, which is why they are considered formidable. PAL is a principality, which means they were ruled by a Prince or Princess.
