To answer your question:
Natural Language Processing and Computational Linguistics.

Fun stuff - like machine translation and syntactic parsers. My theory is that if I know enough about the linguistics side, I can help design stuff, and then send it off to people who are better at programming than me to make it work. Plus there's sometimes a lot of prep work in compiling corpora and most of that is very syntactic/linguistics-y.

I was originally planning on going into Comp Sci, but I couldn't keep up with the math, and the programming was getting over my head. Now I'm in Linguistics, which still kicks my butt on occasion, but at least there's less debugging.

... we had to settle for good ol' fashioned bleach and alcohol. And sporks. Those were popular. I can't tell you how many eyeballs I went through when I first started the job.

I feel like a crotchety old-timer. All shall fear my dementia-induced ramblings!

How do Linguistics and Comp Sci overlap? I'm a CS major myself, trying to minor in Japanese, but I can't really see how it would work the other way around...

Wow. I wander back in after 5 years and it's like nothing has changed - well, except some of the names, but I remember Huinesoron and Neshomeh and... wow, I've missed you guys. *overcome with sudden nostalgia*

Anyway, I dropped back by because my boyfriend recently started asking me some questions about LotR, and that made me remember how much I enjoyed this community. I just wanted to see if you guys were still around.


For those of you who weren't here 5+ years back, hi - I'm Laureril, also known as Laura (irl) or Agents Erin and Maralys of the Dept. of Mary Sues LotR division.

In real life, I'm finishing up a BA in Linguistics, with a minor in Comp Sci. I'm not sure when/if I'll get back involved here - I've got a lot on my plate atm, but it's strangely good to be back. Gah, I haven't really written fanfic in years.

So don't mind me, or my entourage of minis, I'm just sticking my head in to say hi.

Ah well, having stayed shy of the world of fanfic I hadn't been self-medicating with them as often as I had previously...though they did come in handy after a few overheard conversations about plans for the weekend....

I'm still interested in seeing if anybody else remembers me! I may be out of bleeprin, but I can probably steal some from my greatgreatgrandmother. I think my little brother told her they were her heart medicine...he thinks the blackouts are funny I guess. I've got plenty of sporks, and can supplement with junk food of all types, I'm at college after all. It's all over the place, free for the taking, I may have to do a little running after the taking...but exercise is good for me right?

Oh and the reason you probably don't remember me as the guy who did that thing, is I never did get around to doing it... Thus it is quite impressive that you merely recognize me!

(I had written an introductory chapter for my cousin EruDaughter, guess who joined first, I believe we got it approved, but we never got around to putting it up anywhere....I still have it somewhere if anybody's interested in seeing a dated spinnoff)

As I mentioned to Ansela earlier, and admittedly my biology can be corrected here, but, as you say, it's HIV that builds up in one's system. Not AIDS. The nasty one's passing on? It's not AIDS, it's HIV. And it doesn't always develop into AIDS. I think there's tests that show HIV pretty quickly, though possibly not as quickly as the fic mentioned has, but tests that pick up AIDS after that long? Whoever's got it must have a piss poor immune system, for it not to just have been transmitted but also to have developed that fast.

Rated K, Summary: Unbeta'd, Javert/OC A new look at Javert's suicide and why he did it. Well it may not be so new.... and now it is official, I suck at summeries.

It's a oneshot, the OC in question looks suspiciously 'Sue-ish, there are two reviews, both of which have pointed this out, but I can't find any indication from the author that she plans to fix this.

The thing that's bugging me most is that the OC in question doesn't seem to ever be physically present. o.O How would one even deal with something like that, should it prove worth going after? (and that's not saying it will, there are definitely worse badfics. *shudder* But it made me curious.)

We've been talking about AIDS in my Epidemiology class, so I happen to know that it takes about two weeks to even build up enough HIV in your system to transmit it to someone else and about four weeks before it's detectable. A diagnosis of full-blown AIDS after just one week is pretty much impossible.

Note that there are about two whole weeks in which you can be shedding virus without even the possibility of knowing about it. Scary stuff.

Whoever takes that one, please include a nice big helping of "Bad Science/Biology/Medicine" on the charge list.

Surviving
Due to blood transplant, Jack gets AIDS. i'm rating this as a teen because i think most people can handle this kind of stuff but, i'm just warning you now this has to do with AIDS, i will try to update fast.

The AIDS is diagnosed after a week, the pacing is terrible, capitalisation of names is erratic, Cam is at the SGC at the same time as Jack and Janet, the Gate Room now seems to be the Control Room, there are ANs in the middle of paragraphs, there are multiple speakers per paragraph (which gets better in later chapters) and, IMO, the whole thing is far too f---ing flippant about the situation.

Blood Ties
Carters Brother has come to her with a secret now she has to convince everyone to let Andy, her niece, stay at the SGC in order to protect her, Asguard, and the SGC from being uncovered by government factions

Andromeda Carter, daughter of Mark Carter and niece of Samantha Carter. Yes, Sam has a niece in canon. No, we don't know her age or name. That, however, is no excuse for turning the poor lass into a Sue. Using abbreviated ranks (e.g. Maj.) in narrative and speech is silly. Mark knowing about the 'Asguard' is WTF-worthy. And if you're going to Sueify a canonical family member, at least be consistent about the spelling of her full name.

Blood and Water
Leaving a pregnant Vala Mal Doran at the SGC, SG1 and Vala's younger sister, Xala, go on a reconaissance mission against the Priors. Set in late Season 9, prior to the finale.

The universe doesn't need another Mal Doran. The universe couldn't handle another Mal Doran. And how the f--- is Vala pregnant and at the SGC? That completely messes up canon timelines.

Should drake be worried about vigilante justice? Although, how would Nume want revenge on the fox?

Also, somehow i forsee drake getting in big trouble with the Flowers that Be.

True. It is a hassle, but well, none is harmed yet. that might cause a problem later. think any agents on missions were affected as well? That might be a problem as well. imagine your disguise suddenly shifting gender....

The DIO's sole remit is to deal with PPC Canon Mary-Sues. Drake's just an Agent who happens to be an idiot. :P

The DIA on the other hand (I assume that's who you meant -- the DIS are gone gone gone) quite likely would; Drake's causing a major hassle throughout HQ, and that falls under their control. However, since he's not actually harming anyone, they might let it slide.
