(Well, I don't know, but I gave you the benefit of the doubt, and now I do know, so yes) I just really like giving examples.
I think the key is that the Wiki is primarily for us to use, as a reference guide. If I were a new PPC writer who wanted to do a mission in the DMS, I'd want to know how we define 'Mary-Sue' so I didn't get it messed up. It's also very useful next time someone starts telling us how we hate women (not recently, thank the stars, but it's happened a few times).
All of which means that the answer to 'why did my awesome character get a PiPiSee story written about it?' should be in the FAQ For Other People. And, indeed, it may well be buried in there somewhere - but that FAQ is, er, raaaaather confrontational. I'm not sure it really serves its intended purpose. That should probably be worked on...
On the other leaf (er, hand - sorry, writing about Flowers right now), we probably need to discuss exactly that point in the 'Mary-Sue' article: that missions will probably talk (and charge) about physical traits and actions, rather than fundamental flaws... I think it'd be good to encourage doing both, so I'm trying to do so myself:
“The interesting thing,” I commented to Nyx, finding a place on a convenient rock, “is that she’s basically describing the movie, but
still manages to mess it up.”
“That applies to about half the chapter,” Nyx agreed. “Of course, then she has to be clumsy and get her cloak tangled in a bush…”
“Now, be fair,” I chided her, as the ‘Crebain from Dunland’ scene played out. “She may just be legitimately clumsy. Frodo certainly is. And in this case, it puts the Fellowship in actual danger.”
“Possible,” Nyx agreed, glancing over to where
Legolas tried his best to untangle my black and green cloak without tearing it. “However, I have three… no, four counter-points. Firstly, she’s an elf – I don’t think they’re capable of being clumsy.”
“True enough.” I grimaced. “I’d been doing my best to forget she’d claimed that.”
“Secondly, she’s using the scene to throw Legolas out of character – note how he tried
not to rip her cloak, even though failing would mean the potential failure of the entire Quest. I don’t care how special it is – he should have grabbed his dagger and cut her free.”
“Aistaraina..stay completely still..” Legolas whispered to me. Thinking quickly, I pulled my cloak over my head. A few crebain flew right by me. My cloak wasn’t camouflaging with the background. I was frozen on the spot…..“Thirdly,” Nyx went on, ignoring the flock of crows, “she just followed ‘thinking quickly’ with an immediate realisation that she wasn’t actually hidden. That’s not quick thinking, that’s stupidly doing the exact wrong thing.”
“I’ll add it to the charge list,” I promised. “And since I’m now suitably chastened-“
“And
fourthly,” Nyx cut me off as the next chapter opened to Anneliese mysteriously not being mobbed by crows, “the whole incident only happened to make her more Speshul.”
And since you asked... how long that mission takes depends on lots of factors. The current holdup is that I need to check something in
Fellowship of the Ring - specifically, whether in the film the Fellowship leave the Chamber of Mazarbul through the same door they entered - but in general, it's taking a long time to write. It will be released eventually, though - hopefully not
too far in the future.
(And yes, he's a Noldo. His
first mission will probably come out before that one, actually...)
