Okay, full disclosure, I was speaking from a memory of having read the first part of Mists when I was a teenager. I didn't get any further because it was over my head, and had no idea about any of this. I was thinking maybe I ought to try reading it again. Now I think maybe I won't. >.<

In light of... the horrendous stuff that MZB has done in her private life, this kind of stuff cropping up in Mists of Avalon without characters pushing back and the narrative treating it as a serious crime is... very telling.

Here's another, not so line-by-line discussion of the Mists of Avalon, including an account of what MZB stands accused of. Honestly, even though the accusations were made public posthumously, the fact that her husband was convicted and was an ongoing supporter of NAMBLA is telling. There's an extent to which one should not be held responsible for the views of one's spouse and I imagine said spouse supporting NAMBLA of all organisations would be a dealbreaker for most decent people. (And yeah, they did eventually divorce, but she married him after he was convicted...)

So yeah. I can see why you're getting those vibes. The appropriation of Avalon mythos in service of someone's id is definitely present in Hairkink Purityworld AU.

On its best days, the whole point of the PPC is to say "this is what you've done badly, you can do better". The fact that all of us have grown in that exact way is proof that it is possible, if you put the effort in.

We're not going to run you out of town for having written stuff in a genre/style you now hate. We've all done stuff like that before. What matters more is that you don't be too hard on yourself for it and just strive to write better by whatever new yardstick of quality you choose.

You know the type of badfic that I really hate – canon rehashing (which is basically plagiarism of canonical content)? Welp, I used to write one of those when I was really young, in the late 2000s-early 2010s, which I deleted when I wised up. I may or may not qualify to participate in content creation ever again until the day I die.

These sporkings should tell you all you need to know.

But given what Marion Zimmer Bradley has been accused of recently, any real desire to double check on my behalf has gone fully out the window.

So... I'm not sure I'm actually going to take part in the Games myself (I'm... not sure I actually ever did aside from commenting!), but I wanted to clarify that, despite the fact I don't really have much in the way of active agents ATM, I still qualify as active so my characters are actually all available! Even those from TWWA.

Sure, Sergio and Nikki retired ages ago. Ami was never an agent. But what kind of self-respecting badfic author cares about continuity? If you want to use them, do your worst. Just stay clear of Kathleen, Faith and Virgilia - those characters are actually Aelit's, not mine.

“Mary Sue” is just a term jealous sexists use to criticize those brave enough to write! I’m sure Ellie Mae is great!

The Sues that the PPC hunts are completely different! They’re just silly monsters.
