Now /this/ is how you have fun with a canon. Any 'purists' in the room, please take note! And then leave. Forever.
I like to think of myself as a Legodo. :)
((You monster.))
Welcome, fans of the Protectors of the Plot Continuum and supporters of the Canon Protection Initiative! If you've got a story to plug, an opinion to share, or a discussion you want to join in, this is the place!
If you're looking for PPC stories to read, why not start with The Original Series – the missions of the famous assassins Jay and Acacia, the very first stories in PPC history. Once you've finished them, check out the list of Killed Badfic to find a mission you like the look of, or The Complete List of PPC Fiction to look up specific agents or departments.
Before you join the fun, there are some important links you should know about. Being familiar with these will save you a lot of hassle!

But I guess if it has to be someone else, it had better be you. Nice move having Roxanna actually replace that slob OC. Actually recruiting her to the cause would've been better, though. Maybe Huinesoron will get another shot at it next time?
Also, where's my cameo? You literally can't talk about the history of this Dullfic without acknowledging my agents' role in it! Come on.
(( Ugh, I hate Mirror!Nesh. Petulant not-quite-demands to be included in other people's stuff are sadly a thing young!me actually did, so escalating that to full-on demands seemed right. I have no idea which characters were allegedly involved or what she thinks was so important, but it probably wasn't actually that big a deal. *deepest eye-roll* ))
Yeah, I watch his videos sometimes. It's always nice to get information from a source that clearly cares about getting his facts straight and will say when all the information isn't in yet and we shouldn't be too quick to jump to conclusions. Also one that will straight-up say so when all the information IS in (but with the caveat that science can always change!). {= )
I also quite like Dr. Hope's Sick Notes and Mama Doctor Jones, if this sort of thing is up your alley!

I was basically going on the assumption of endemic racism typical of the time period, what with the well-known criticism of Tolkien's evil races all being dark-skinned; therefore the most pure beings, the elves, must be light-skinned. That's a great point about the House of Bëor resembling the Noldor, though—I did turn up that quote about them ranging to swarthy when I was poking around the wikis for help.
I wonder about the Northmen, though (Rohirrim, Dunlendings, Men of Dale and their descendants). The Rohirrim are sort of half Norse, half Asian Steppe nomads in inspiration, right? ... And now I've actually looked up the Dunlendings, who are said to be dark of skin and hair (shocker), but their ancestors were kin to the folk of Haleth (noted elf-friends) and the folk of Bree (basically normal people), and the Númenóreans kinda treated them like crap, so their enmity toward the usurpers is pretty justified. And they're not fans of orcs, either.
So like... are the critics basically just wrong about this? {= O

I warned SRPA that this discussion was nearing a conclusion two days ago, and as the consensus seems clear, I have enacted the proposals. SRPA is hereby banned for two years, and if he returns, further inappropriate actions will be met with a permanent ban.
I LOVE LORD OF THE RINGS! LET ME SHOW YOU THIS HILARIOUS AND RELATABLE "MEME" FROM MY FACEBOOK LOCKDOWN GIN AND PROSECCO GROUP!
I GOT ARAMINTA TO DO THAT FOR ME BECAUSE SHE IS BOTH A LESBIAN AND A DISAPPOINTMENT SO SHE MUST KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT MAN THINGS LIKE COMPUTERS AND FOOTBALL AND PUBS! I WONDER IF THIS FORMAT WORKS WITH THOSE HILARIOUS MINION THINGS TOO!
(tag urselves im goldo)
This was something I had hoped to be able to keep about Agent Hurley. I figured that if I was really pressed for an explanation I could come up with something back when I first wrote her this way, but I'm happy to see that canon supports what I've done here.
Thanks a lot! :)
I like it—it explains why missions to Legendary Badfics tend to tackle the whole thing, or close to it. Gotta have that ripple back to canon to undo that kind of damage. I fear that, taken the wrong way, this might encourage long missions that don't NEED to be long, but then some of us (read: me) never needed an excuse to run long. ^_~
What say you of the TOS rule that the agents have to wait until the particular moment the canon and/or the baseline quality of the fic is well and truly broken?
~Neshomeh
Do you have any idea who I am? Disrespect me again, and you'll be outta here before you can say "banhammer."
(( Obviously Mirror!Neshomeh is a tyrannical mod [which the Mirror!Board obviously has] with no compunctions about banning anyone who types at her cross-eyed. ^_~ ))
Short answer: please go for it!
Three quotes from the Silmarillion:
"The Vanyar were his people; they are the Fair Elves... next came the Noldor... the greatest host came last, and they are named the Teleri..."
Tolkien often uses 'fair' to mean 'pretty', but here he's comparing the Vanyar to other Elves. He may mean 'blonde', but may also mean 'pale'.
"The seven sons of Feanor were... and Caranthir the dark..."
Why is Caranthir 'dark'? Again, there are several possibilities, but see also:
"Ar-Feiniel she was called, the White Lady of the Noldor, for she was pale, though her hair was dark..."
Aredhel Ar-Feiniel is the White Lady because she is pale. If the Noldor were all pale, this would be... a really dumb nickname. XD
So we can infer the possibility of non-pale elves; but since everyone knows Tolkien's Elves are white, that must be the best we can do, right?
Well... no. Check this out:
"... the house of Beor. The Men of that house were dark or brown of hair, with grey eyes; and of all Men they were the most like to the Noldor..." (The Silmarillion: Of the Coming of Men into the West)
"There were fair-haired men and women among the folk of Beor, but many of them had brown hair (going usually with brown eyes) and many were less fair of skin, some indeed being swarthy." (HoME XII The Peoples of Middle-earth: Of Dwarves and Men)
Conclusion: the Noldor were dark-skinned, and it's only the fact that their most prominent representatives in the Third Age (Elrond and Galadriel) are mostly non-Noldo* that makes us think they weren't.
(If pressed for backstory, they'd want to be from Rivendell or the Grey Havens in the Third Age; the other Elven realms were pretty low on Noldor.)
hS
*Galadriel is 1/4 Noldor - her grandparents are 2 Teleri, one Vanya, and Finwe the High King of the Noldor. Elrond has one half-Noldorin grandmother (Idril, who's half-Vanya) who married a half-Beorian (Tuor), plus great-granddad Beren, who is noted as being one of the paler Beorians (because Tolkien gave him his own sandy hair).
I'll e-mail the mission to you in just a bit.
I'm not the best when it comes to characters, so you'll definitely need another beta when it comes to that. But I can definitely read it and leave some feedback in less than two weeks. Just reach out to me at jakebalmer2@gmail.com (That's not actually my name, to clear up any uncertainty. There's a long story behind that email...)
Hi, hS!
Nesh has pointed out something to me during the betaing of this mission that I'm a little hung up on. One of my agents has brown skin outside of disguise, and it was something I kept about her when I wrote her disguised as a Middle-earth elf (since I wasn't very comfortable with changing her skin color). Nesh told me that this might be a bit too much of a canon stretch, but also advised to ask you on this particular subject. Could a brown-skinned elf in a Tolkien mission be explained away (or just... not be pointed out to begin with), or is it really too big a divergence from canon?
I meant things like whether the pacing, the character dynamics, the occasional joke etc. work properly. Basically anything that would also jump out at you if you were a casual reader.
World'd be simper if everyone lissened to ya 'cause YER SIMPLE! Ya wan lissening? say sum'in like dat wun more time and ill make ya lissen ta ma fist!
((First of all, I forgot to put Mirror Gamer as my author. Ouch. Second of all, Mirror Neshomesh is seriously scaring me at this point, which means you’re doing really well...))
There ain't a person here who want to lissen ta yer screamin! Shut up, er ill shut ya up meself!
I don't know the Fatal Frame canon that well, so no thanks.
I don't blame you for noping out on that one, but I didn't say what fic, specifically, the mission is about. You can rest easy, though. It's Fatal Frame.
Even as someone with high tolerance for squick, Chibiusa's 7th Birthday is too much for me.
