My plan for if I enlarge the map to encompass the North-East Continent, is to add a bunch of islands to the far north which represent real-world places and entities. Nusantara is up there, and possibly even the mythical Arell itself. The reason I haven't put them in is that Arell is mythical, Nusantara is implied to be in another world (and tropical besides), and Ydyff is both 'in the far north' and close enough for Thanasius to sail to 'every few months', in a medieval setting. There's clearly something unnatural between Weab and the Northern Isles; I'm just not sure what.

This is amazing.
Also, just a nitpick that has no impact and has a 9/10 chance of not being seen, crescents in heraldry are usually points up. (Then again, this is supposed to be symbolic of a moon, so I prefer this anyways.) -

You're right that technically this is a crescent points sinister, or a decrescent, which apparently symbolises the waning moon.

Either that the crescent should be points upwards, or the significance of left-right.
Either way, it's now updated. Though actually, I'd forgotten that 'dexter' is from the POV of the bearer - ie, facing left for the viewer. So it was always waxing.

I originally imagined Are-Pea as a wilderness, sort of between everywhere and everywhere else, or running through multiple nations, but definitely a place you could go. I suppose I could just say I was practicing the art of Arpying in the wilds of Niyopehtz, though, since that's where I did most of my role-playing anyway...?

The nations of the Are-Pea Alliance no doubt have wilderness areas; you can say you're in 'the wilderness of Are-Pea' in the same sense that you can be in 'the wilderness of North America'. Yes, you could also specify that you're in northern Montana - but you don't have to.

The one question I have is, what's the relationship of the teacup and the elanor (ha ha, by the way)? Is the elanor a design on the cup? In the cup? Above, below, or next to the cup? Enquiring minds want to know! (Partly because I need to make it...)

I can't find any examples of a charge overlapping an ordinary, so maybe it's just Not Done. You could maybe cheat by adding a pair of sable bars to the edges of the bend, but... honestly, I'll just draw it the way you describe it and leave it at that.

You've got two different kinds of bend in there. Were you looking for a field split between black and red, or a black field with a red bar across it (which would be in violation of the Rule of Tincture, but that's neither here nor there)? Or something else?

I did wonder about giving a plain text description of what I wanted too, just to make it clear, but thought that I'd got a handle on the heraldic language. Oh well.
Out of interest, how should I have phrased it? -
Just without the first two words. by
on 2014-08-28 13:20:00 UTC

'Per bend' indicates that the field is divided into two halves, so has to be paired with two colours - 'per bend, sable and gules'. Since you want the field to be a solid colour, with a bend gules placed over it as a charge, your blazon should start with 'Sable, between' etc. So you were really close!

The map of Iric. by

Reply
I've deliberately left a few things vague; the southern branch of the mountains aren't labelled, in case someone comes up with a better idea than keeping them as part of the Bravneits. Equally, the question of whether the Meibot flows past Flayme or Medyantur is unanswered - it's entirely possible, given geography further west, that neither of its tributaries share its name.
hS -
The Meibot'd almost have to go by Medyantur, wouldn't it? by
on 2014-08-28 10:45:00 UTC
Reply
Just from where I described its span, Medyantur is right there. Flayme I wasn't so sure about though, which is why I didn't name that one - much like I wasn't sure whether to bother naming the tributaries of the Nechsiv or the second river that goes past the southern part of La Wunj. I might throw something together later, I just wanted to get some of the map laid down before this thread got off the page - hope it's been helpful. Might have a stab at a short story later too.
(And yeah, I wasn't sure if the southern mountains would count as another range or not. Went off the fact the Larninkurvs keep the same name throughout their span.) -

I'd assumed the river near Flayme wasn't the main body of the Meibot, since it originates in what is now Borrd, but who knows. This could be something in-universe cartographers argue about. :P I'll come up with some other names for stuff later.
(Also, for national anthems, I get the vibe that Iric's would be something based off "Amhrán na bhFiann" but I'm not the best at adapting lyrics. Part of that is admittedly running with how you've said it's probably analogous to Ireland, as well as its genesis from a revolt against Borrd and the revival of a dead kingdom.) -

Aaaand honestly, I'm not too hip on the internet cultures, even the more famous websites, so I don't understand most of the jokes/history behind the nations of Weab. I don't even recognize half the names.
But I am sorry for screwing that up. Feel free to make any changes necessary to the story to make it fit correctly. (That includes the medieval voice, too; I probably let some more modern phraseology in by mistake, knowing me.) -

BTW, how far have you gotten in your studies? I took Latin in college, and from what you just said, it seems that topics come at you a lot faster than in high school. IIRC, by the end of my second semester, we had already gone over all five declensions and at least the present tense of all "four" conjugations (i.e., the -are verbs, the -ēre verbs, the -ĕre verbs (of which scribere is one), the "third -io" verbs (i.e. verbs like jacio, jacere, jeci, jactus) and the -ire verbs).

I've tried to create it in paint, but that's failed three times now. I was thinking that the argent arrow would be purely in the top sable sector, and the or arrow would be purely in the bottom sable sector, and perhaps both arrows to be pointing towards the center. Although I'm not sure if I needed some extra words to have specified that.
-
Aha. by
on 2014-08-22 12:21:00 UTC
Reply
Pretty much the only extra words were 'points inwards'. That implies that the two both point to the centre of the saltire, which would necessitate them both sitting entirely in the sable. It means smaller arrows, of course, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Stop squabbling. We have other, more pressing needs to attend to. The Marizu armies are growing in strength, and our own land is full of internal strife. Now is not the time for petty disputes; now is the time to act, to once again ride against the Marizu in splendour and drive them back to whence they came.

The suggestion of Sir Ekyl that the road from Godreve be integrated into the trade network by the establishment of a highway to Borrd itself is welcomed by Baron Huinesoron. We suggest, however, that the question of who should be contracted to build the road be considered at length by Baron Cassie, rather than simply granting the task to Sir Ekyl's favoured workers.
