Happy New Year and hello, everyone! Goodness, it's been a while.
2023 was not one of my greatest years, but I decided to try harder and be better this year... and one of my resolutions for 2024 is to read more books. I managed to finally drag myself out of a huge reading slump in December, and I'm proud to report that my few 2023 reads were (mostly) quality over quantity. Here are my top ten books from last year, and an honorable mention!
- Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
- The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell
- The Salt Grows Heavy by Cassandra Khaw
- Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield
- The Blind Owl by Sadegh Hedayat
- The Butchering Art by Lindsey Fitzharris
- Zombies: A Cultural History by Roger Luckhurst
- The Penguin Book of Vampire Stories edited by Alan Ryan
- The Crow by James O'Barr
- Wormwood by Poppy Z. Brite
+1: Dark Matter by Michelle Paver
If you've read any of these, what did you think? What were your favorite reads from last year? Do you have a TBR list for this year? I'd love to hear any and all bookish discussion from you folks.
Oculus, wishing everyone a great year

Script-style riffing of a badfic I missioned! by

Remember this mission done by Kaguya and Inasuke? The badfic slain there is receiving a riffing, but in script-style because the narrative is too tedious for a traditional MST. The script-style is something I learned from Das Sporking, in which the content of the fic is humorously summarized in script format. The riffing is as of yet incomplete and will be updated until it eventually covers the entire fic, but for now the first 6 chapters are done. You can read it and check back for updates here, but be warned of swearing, both in-fic and in the riff because the fic disturbs and angers me at times, and constant references to and trivialization of senseless murder.

Well, I was thinking the person who writes a mission would just use the legal doc link. by

And besides, it's not the only fic that has had physical copies. pats his copy of My Immortal

hey! for some odd reason, discord decided to kick me out of most of my servers on my account and honestly i have no idea why lol, i don’t see them on my list and people in those servers told me i have left. i checked the ban status on my account and it says im 100% clear (as in no warnings or anything), so it can’t be a mistaken ban. one of those servers that i got booted from happens to be the ppc server unfortunately :/
so yeah, can any mods post an invite link so i can join back?
thanks, HC

Would anyone object to me adding this to the Unclaimed Badfic page? (nm) by

tl;dr: I'm lined up to be one of the "short stories by other authors" that're already funded in the Kickstarter for the fifth Post-Self book, Marsh.
As y'all might have noticed, I've gotten sucked in to the Post-Self books and have done a bunch of writing in the setting. One of the earlier things I wrote, which is now called "Sentences", led to Makyo (the main author on these books) asking if I wanted to make it canon as part of Marsh a few months back. Once I got done with the excited squeeeeeeeeee noises, I said yes, and now that the money's in (among other things, to pay me for my words) and the first draft of Marsh is in, I'm confident enough in saying that this is happening that I'm good to brag about it here.
This is also me shilling for aforesaid Kickstarter, since that'll both get you the good stuff that is Marsh but also ... my story! At a discount! (I have checked, and if the anthology becomes a separate volume, Kickstarter rewords'll include both volumes. I note this here in case the clarifying edit hasn't happened before I hit "Post".)
For those curious, my contribution is "Sentences" and it shows contains the reveal of why 23 billion people and a year went missing, aka the big Marsh spoiler and spoilers for my thing.
(To give the line that kicked this idea off, spoilers for Marsh premise, somewhat spoilers for my thing)
So, yeah, that's happening!

Just saying it was never likely to be a PPCer doing it.
It may not necessarily have been trolls per se, either, to be fair—occasionally I suppose an author's friend has come across a mission somehow and decided to tell them about it, which is understandable; or someone who reads PPC missions but doesn't actually know the community culture might've thought they were "helping" by informing an author. I don't know where to find any examples offhand, though, and if the end result is predictably upsetting the author and/or inciting the author to come after us, it's hard to distinguish from doing it on purpose.

We got New Year's Eve snow here in Chicago; that was nice. I like it when winter behaves like winter.
Phobos and I somehow decided it was a good idea to watch an apocalyptic thriller (Leave the World Behind) on a night people were obviously going to set off fireworks; that was silly. Good movie, though. Some plotholes, but very effective at creating a tense, uncomfortable atmosphere and making you desperate to know what the heck is really going on. We paused to try to figure it out (and reset our adrenaline levels) several times.
I'm... not looking forward to this year in the US, if I'm honest. There's too much uncertainty for resolutions, so I just have a wish: that we make it through in one piece, without electing another would-be dictator.

Looks okay so far - a bit chilly and damp, but it should dry out. The number one TV channel in the UK did ring it in by Rickrolling the entire nation with actual live Rick Astley, so, y'know, we're off to a good start.

Your request for future installments to focus on Tanner will be granted! In fact, you've given me a more interesting idea for mission number 2 than what I had before.
I'll go back and clear up the action and typos at... some point. Maybe after I get the mission finished?

I'm looking for a beta for a story about PPC paramedics in New Caledonia. 1859 words. OCs from several different canons, and some Eldar biology, but it should be readable without having any canon knowledge. The hardest thing to understand is probably all the medical jargon.
Just let me know via Discord or email if you want to beta and I will send you the story link
