[If you're confused over the timeline - Baron Me was originally heading to Ofum. Then Freckles caught him and diverted him to Barony PC. Then he returned home by way of Barony Iximaz. And now he's riding south to Barony Thanasius Ampelius.]

The Copperway was quiet as Baron Huinesoron and his secretary rode south. "This is a taste of things to come," Huinesoron mused.

"I'm sure it's not that bad, milord," Terri said. "Baron PC will get the trade network started up again in no time, and the Copperway is still the best route to the western baronies."

"But not to Borrd," Huinesoron said. "We've been suffering since the opening of the Iron Highway to legitimate travel; now we'll lose even more traffic to the Barnacle Way. And the people of Ozerbord will suffer, mark my word - unless we can pull this off."

"Yes..." Terri looked across at the baron. "Milord... I would feel much more comfortable if you'd brought Freckles with you. Baron Thanasius Ampelius may not be... feeling kindly disposed towards you, and I am no warrior."

"I needed Freckles to bring Sandra and Kaitlyn home," Huinesoron explained. "Besides, despite his elevation, Baron Ampelius is still a citizen of Ozerbord; he will not lightly attack the Lord Protector."

"No, it's not like that would grant him de facto independence or anything," Terri muttered, but she knew better than to pursue the argument. Once the baron's mind was set, it was set.

When Thanasius Ampelius found him, Baron Huinesoron was standing on the outskirts of Skypcht, looking up at the newest sky-ship the town had completed. "They are truly remarkable," Huinesoron said, not looking round. "The magics which keep them aloft are beyond my understanding, but I can tell that you've already seen their potential far more clearly than I ever did."

The baron shook himself and gestured to his secretary, then looked at Thanasius. "But if I have been lacking in vision," he said, "at least my hindsight is excellent. As is my economics advice - I know, for instance, that these ships are highly expensive to construct and run. The magics involved, the relatively large size needed to get everything to work - or fit, for that matter! - the requirement for a mage to be on every crew... please don't think I'm slighting them, they are truly magnificent, but they are hardly suited for short-range, high-frequency transport.

"And so, for the good of Ozerbord and both our baronies, I propose an... alliance, I suppose, or agreement." Huinesoron gestured north, towards the distant Batveg Mountains. "In the north, on the Spalchik Lowlands, I am expanding the town of Emaille. There, I intend to construct my own flying ships - not the magic-powered variety you are working on, but lighter-than-air ships. They are slower, and more prone to being thrown off-course by the wind - but they are also far cheaper, and far quicker to construct.

"You could, of course, try to compete with me. You might even manage to claim the entire trade - the Skypcht industry is established, while Emaille's is new. But all that will achieve is to reduce the income Ozerbord can receive. If, instead, we work together, letting our two styles of sky-ship complement, not confront, each other... everyone will end up richer, and the rest of Konti-Nyuum will receive a better service.

"So, Baron Thanasius Ampelius - what do you say?"
