One hand on his horse's bridle, Baron Huinesoron half-turned. He held Thanasius' gaze for a long time, his eyes betraying nothing. Then, at last, he nodded slightly.

"I believe you," he said quietly. "You will serve Konti-Nyuum well." And with no more farewell than that, he swung himself up onto his horse and rode off towards the north.

Ye merciful gods above, I hate the feudal system.

Politics in Plort is a complicated subject. In Borrd, the barons are the government, by way of the Baronial Council. In Wechi, she's completely separate, though an influential voice. In Iric, it's a similar situation, though at least one baron is also a member of the government.

In Ozerbord, though? Up until this week, the only baron was also the head of government; all civilian and military power was in one set of hands. That means Ozerbord never really bothered to notice the difference between the Baron and the Protector; in fact, that's the reason for the former tax havens, where Borrd law and Ozerbord clashed.

Now, at least, the havens are mostly gone. But there are now two barons in Ozerbord - a place where the people are used to thinking of the baron as the government.

So it's a feudal system of sorts: a setup where the baron (that's Thanasius) tries to claim as much authority as he can get away with, while the Protector (Huinesoron) tries to keep hold of it. Which way the balance will swing on any given day depends on the people of Barony Thanasius Ampelius, for the most part.

And one weapon in that political war is stating your case over-strongly. I have no clear idea where the line between baron and Protector lies in the structure of Ozerbord - and I suspect Baron Me doesn't, either. He's making claims, and if he can get them to stick, they'll become the foundation of Ozerbord's future political system.

Yeah. I hate the feudal system. And politics. Especially politics.
