The new baron's cowled head moved hither and thither as he observed the town. A commoner, bearing the stylised skyship symbol of Skypcht on a small armband, arrived and brought him a scroll, then retreated to allow the barons to converse privately.
Thanasius opened the scroll, read it, and wordlessly presented it to Huinesoron. It was an offer of alliance, signed by the King of Ydyff.
“Rumours travel fast, it would seem.” Slowly, the monk removed his cowl, revealing a bald head whose features slightly resembled those of a raven – there was something in the shining eyes, long nose and curious expression. His hands, too, somewhat resembled a raven's claws. He turned and glared at Huinesoron. “I will be frank.” A small pause. “I dislike your politicking. I dislike your methods. What's more, I dislike uninvited visitors – one could say that this is an act of spying, and Protector you may be, but this is not a matter of... national security, shall we say?”
Thanasius looked back toward the town. “However, I have a responsibility to those people. Would cut-throat competition help them? Maybe. Maybe not. Would cooperation – a cartel, in essence – help them? In the short run, certainly. In the long run, I am not so sure.”
The monk put his cowl back up. “This is not something I can answer right away. Despite your... lack of manners, showing up like that, I will not spit on my people's sacred traditions. Come with me to Spectacle, so we may dine in peace. I will talk with my friends, consult the relevant tomes, and you may take a break from your journeying.”
Inwardly, the monk smiled bitterly. How would the Baron answer that – would he, figuratively speaking, enter the lion's den, or would he risk offending Thanasius, who no doubt had a force of magi nearby, and was rumoured to be quite the warrior himself?

[And the politicking thickens!]
